Ardrotsava was celebrated on 10th January. Abhishekha to Lord Malahanikareshwara in the hilltop shrine took place during the Brahmi Muhurta. The Mahamangalarati took place at 5:30 AM in the presence of the Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji. The Utsava Murtis of Lord Malahanikareshwara and Goddess Bhavani were taken in a procession led by the Jagadguru. Following three circumambulations in the hillock, the procession continued along the main streets of Sringeri.
Devotees including residents of Sringeri made offerings and received the Jagadguru’s Blessings. As per age-old tradition, the procession proceeded to the Sringeri Municipal Office Building, where a Puja was performed to the Utsava Murtis by the Purohit of the Peetham. Ashtavadhana Seva was performed. The procession then returned to the temple amidst chants of devote hymns of Sri Adi Shankaracharya’s Shivananda Lahari chanted by the Vidyarthis of the Sadvidya Sanjeevini Samskrita Maha Pathashala. The previous night, Andhakasura Vadha was celebrated.
Karnataka CM visits Sringeri
Hon. Chief Minister of Karnataka Sri B S Yediyurappa visited Sringeri on 13th January. The Chief Minister had Darshan of the Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji, and received the Jagadguru's Blessings. Karnataka Assembly Chief Whip Sri Jeevaraj, Hon. Minister Sri Basavaraj Bommai, Advisor to the Chief Minister Sri Diwakar, Mudigere MLA Sri Kumaraswamy, Tarikere MLA Sri Suresh and Chikmagalur MLA Sri C T Ravi also had Darshan. Earlier, the Chief Minister had Darshan of Goddess Sharada and also visited Sri Rishyashringeshwara Swamy temple in Kigga for Darshan. Sri V R Gowrishankar, Administrator and CEO of the Peetham, was honoured in a public function by the Hon. Chief Minister on behalf of the Government for his services to the Malnad region of Karnataka.
Peetham conducts Vedic Sammelans
The annual Vedic Sammelan organised by the Peetham in Maharashtra, now in its 9th year, took place in Nagpur on 17th and 18th January 2009. About 200 Vedic scholars from various Vedic Shakhas participated. Six elderly scholars were specially honoured with Rs. 25,000/- during the Sammelan.
120 Vedic scholars hailing from Orissa, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam participated in the 3rd annual Veda Sammelan held in Kolkata on 19th January.
The 9th annual Vedic Sammelan in the holy town of Varanasi took place on 20th and 21st January. 125 scholars and 400 students took part with recitation of all the extant 11 Veda Shakhas reverberating from the Sringeri Shankara Math premises in Varanasi. 50 Shastra scholars also attended the function and were felicitated. 3 elderly scholars were specially honoured. 40 participants, mostly youngsters, took part in the Bhagavad Gita Jnana Yagna scheme of the Peetham and were honoured with cash awards. 12 of them received Rs. 21,000/- for having memorised and having recited the entire Bhagavad Gita.
On January 23rd, the 8th annual Vedic Sammelan was held in New Delhi. 130 Vedic scholars participated. A boy aged 8 years participated successfully in the Gita Jnana Yajna. On 24th, the third edition of the Vedic Sammelan was held in Hyderabad. About 400 Vedic scholars including 100 Ghanapathis participated and were honoured.
On 31st January 2009, Lalita Pachami was observed. Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji performed a special Puja to Goddess Sharada at Sharadamba temple at Sringeri.
On February 2nd 2009, Ratha Saptami was observed. A special Puja to Lord Suryanarayanaswamy seated on a sandalwood chariot was performed in the morning at Sri Narasimha Bharati Yagashala in the presence of the Jagadguru. Earlier, a Surya Homa was also performed. The Jagadguru then proceeded to the temple of Sri Suryanarayanaswamy at Elmagge, near Narasimha Vanam. The Jagadguru offered worship to the deity at the temple, set in a sylvan ambience at the banks of the river Tunga. Panchamrita Abhisheka was performed amidst chants of Vedic hymns to Lord Suryanarayanaswamy. The hymns included the Soura Suktam from the Rig Veda.
